At Bayer Cemetery Brokers, we offer people to apply to become a licensed cemetery broker or agent with us. We ask that people have at least two years of death care experience and a passion for helping. But how does one actually get experience in death care in order to become an agent or broker?
The death care industry actually covers a wide range of services related to the deceased. It may not be as narrow as you thought. Such things as funeral homes, coffin building, cemeteries, headstone crafting, and crematoria all fit into the death care umbrella. The United States alone has over 22,000 funeral homes and 115,000 cemeteries. A lot of workers gain their death care experience at these places.
“Death Care” covers many different things
The most common road to becoming a cemetery broker is to have experience as a cemetery salesperson. People from other past positions in cemetery experience must usually fill out petitions that salespeople won’t have to. A salesperson is employed by brokers to help with duties such as selling and listing cemetery property or other death-related services. Brokers themselves deal with the same services but on a higher-up level than a salesperson.
One must do a number of other tasks in order to move on to a cemetery broker application. The Cemetery and Funeral Bureau of California website lists all of these things. There is a Cemetery Broker Examination that the person must pass; this is administered by Cemetery and Funeral Bureaus in the United States. A person must usually also be a resident of the state in which they wish to be a broker. He or she must also have committed no crimes or acts that constitute “grounds for license denial under Section 480 of the Business and Professions Code” (CFB).
Becoming a cemetery broker takes many steps, but the experience is worth it for many
Be aware that there are a number of fees and steps to becoming a cemetery salesperson and then a cemetery broker. The tasks are not necessarily easy ones, and not everyone can handle such work positions in life. However, such work is rewarding for others, as some take pride in helping people pass on and seeing to aiding loved ones that are left behind.
