Greenlawn Memorial Park was founded by Ed Helm in 1931, following his establishment of Bakersfield Monument Company in 1927. Recognizing Bakersfield’s growth, he saw the need for additional interment property. The planning for Greenlawn Mortuary began in 1934, and Ed Helm himself broke ground for the chapel in 1941.

Greenlawn Memorial Park is described as a serene “resting or sleeping place,” where the beauty of nature and landscape architecture create a peaceful environment. Helm envisioned it as a modern burial estate, featuring lush lawns, flowers, and shrubs, designed to offer tranquility and beauty.

Ed Helm hoped Greenlawn Memorial Park would attract residents of Kern County for generations, not just for its physical beauty but also for the dedication of its staff. His vision has been upheld by the hard work of his son, Marshall E. Helm, and the continued commitment of his grandchildren.
