3 Cemeteries in the U.S. You Must Visit

← Back to Blog

A cemetery is a sanctuary for the deceased to rest peacefully and a place for loved ones to honor those who have passed. Some may find cemeteries creepy, but they can be serene and beautiful with the right perspective. A historic cemetery tells a story of what once was. Believe it or not, there is a vast amount of history woven deep into cemeteries across our nation.

You can learn a lot while visiting a historic cemetery, though it may sound off-putting to some. Rather than looking at a cemetery as a place of evil (or whichever typical myth that comes to mind), take interest in the history there. Those who lie in each historic cemetery paved a path for the future of society.

Without further ado, here are three cemeteries that hold a great deal of history in the United States:

Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 – New Orleans, Louisiana

A majority of the graves in this cemetery were built in the 18th and 19th centuries as above-ground vaults. There are three of these cemeteries in the Big Easy (hence the “No. 1” in the title), but this one is the oldest of all cemeteries in New Orleans. All visitors of this cemetery must be accompanied by a licensed tour guide as it is the burial site of many prominent families of the Creole population. And if you do happen to be one of those folks who enjoys spooky vibes, this cemetery is rumored to be haunted!

God’s Acre – Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

God’s Acre is one of the oldest colonial cemeteries in America. It is often a destination for tourists and visitors who are intrigued by its history. With a variety of pretty trees and quiet places, the cemetery provides its visitors with a nice place for walks and relaxation. The cemetery was constructed in the 1700s and the first burial was that of John Mueller who died in June of 1742.

Arlington National Cemetery, Washington DC

This special cemetery has a rich history in the Nation’s Capital. The grave sites of President John F. Kennedy and U.S. Army General John J. Pershing are both spectacles that visitors long to see on the tour. The U.S. Coast Guard Memorial is also a popular stop on the tour. There are around 30 funeral services every day of the week and approximately 8 services every Saturday. It is safe to say that this is one of the most well-renowned cemeteries in the entire United States. If you have any questions regarding any of the cemeteries we manage be sure to call our office.
